Gliding

Flying without an engine is great fun and probably easier to learn than you imagine.  Also known as sailplanes, Gliders come as two seater or single seaters.  Instruction is given in a two seater at about 2000 feet, lasting about 10-15 minutes and you will fly at about 60 knots.

Gliding is  year round sport and Australia is one of the best places to enjoy it due to the excellent thermals especially during out hot dry summers.

A trial lesson will cost about $AU 100.  Contact the Gliding Federation of Australia for more info.

Go-Karting

If travelling with your bottom almost touching the ground at over 60km per hour appeals to you then try Go-Karting.  You will need to join a club and obtain a provisional licence.

Costs about $AU 20 for a couple of dozen laps of an indoor circuit.
More info from Confederation of Australian Motorsport and the Australian Karting Association

Great White Encounters

The Great White Shark has been protected in Australia since 1998.  They can grow up to 4 metres in length and are most commonly found in South Australia and the southern end of Western Australia.  Cage diving trips are the go and the best time is from February to late May.

Trips are generally around 4 days and cost more than $AU 2000 per person.

Hang-gliding, Microlighting & Paragliding

Hang gliders are aircraft in which you fly hanging suspended under wings, using your bodyweight to steer.  A paraglider is like having wings and it is possible for you to stay up all day.  Microlighting is similar to hang gliding but it has an engine suspended in the tricycle type undercarriage. A trial flight lasts about 20 minutes.

Australia has some great thermals which makes flying all year round possible weather permitting.

An intro course to hang gliding is about $AU 200,  microlighting about $AU 120.

Jet Skiing

Jet skis are a PWC (personal water craft) and includes waverunners, wetbikes and sea-doos. You need to be at least 16 years old and hold a boat operators licence.

Kayaking & Canoeing

Learning to canoe is easiest on a flat calm surface.  There are many types of canoeing and kayaking available - flatwater racing, freestyle, slalom, marathon, wild water, touring, sea kayaking and canoe polo.

More info from Australian Canoeing.  Cost for a half day course is around $AU 100.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing evolved from windsurfing and wakeboarding but using a parachute type kite.  It's fun as long as you know your limits, wear a kite leash and play safe.  A qualified instructor can take you through the basic instruction. Anyone can learn as long as you can swim reasonably well and be generally fit.  A one day lesson will set you back about
$AU 250.  More info from Australian Kitesurfing Association.

Land Yachting

Karts with sails, powered by the wind, land yachts can sail in as little as 5 knots.  Most of the land yachting is done in Western Australia or South Australia because both states have ideal landscapes - dried salt lakes such as Lake Walyungup & Lake Lefoy (WA) or Lake Eyre (SA).  The season extends from November to April.

Doesn't cost anything but it's a good idea to join a club :
South Australian Independent Land Sailors
Sandgropers Land Yacht Club
